Our History
Lambda Chi Rho was founded on March 16, 1962 by a group of education majors at Newark State College (now Kean University) located in Union, New Jersey.
Our colors are yellow for the sun which gives life, brown for the earth and beige as a symbol of it's impurities to remind us that nothing is perfect. Our symbols are the yellow rose and the gavel. Our motto is Leadership Creates Responsibility, the first letters in each word representing the first letters in our name; our slogan is Sunshine and Sisterhood. Lambda Chi Rho started out as a community service based organization and remains so today. Lambda Chi Rho is open to women of all races, creeds, majors, and walks of life.
"We were a group of girls who met during freshman year and began to hang around together. We all got along and had a lot of fun. There were 25 of us. During sophmore year, invitations to pledge sororities were sent out. Most of us got pledges to different sororities, but we wanted to stay together. We approached the board and asked if we could form a sorority of our own. They said that we had to write up a charter, pick a name, etc. That is how Lambda Chi Rho was founded. We all voted on the colors, designed the pin and chose the name. We all had a part in it. It was a great group and became one of the top sororities on campus. Our second year, we pledged 60 girls and they all joined!"
