Many women have questions about sororities and Greek life and are unsure what to ask when trying to find the right one. We will attempt to answer any of the common questions you may have about the sorority. But if there is anything that you need clarified just send us an email or contact one of the sisters and we’ll answer any questions you have!!
What is Lambda Chi Rho ?
That is a simple question, but a very important question to ask yourself about a potential sorority. Who are they and what do they stand for? Lambda Chi Rho is a local sorority at Kean University that just so happens to be one of the most culturally diverse organizations on campus. We come from all backgrounds, races, majors, shapes and sizes, and personalities as you can tell from pictures, yet we still come together in order to support and trust each other in a sisterhoood. We focus on service, academics, and social events. Many of our sisters have balanced the sorority and academics, and made the Dean’s list and won many honors at the annual Greek Banquet.
Is Lambda Chi Rho a national or local sorority?
Lambda Chi Rho is a local sorority, which means we do not have chapters at other colleges and universities like nationals do. You will only find Lambda Chi Rho here at Kean. While, nationals have the benefit of having sisters and brothers from all over the nation – and sometimes all over the world that they can network with. However, as a local sorority we feel that we benefit by personally knowing ALL of our sisters. Even if we have not met sisters that came before us we still have heard of them or are able to meet them at a reunuion, christmas party, or another social event. Some of us have dormed together, taken classes together, gotten jobs and formed everlasting friendships just by knowing one another. Our local status grants us the perfect opportunity to bond and be able to meet any sister that will ever wear our letters.
What does Lambda Chi Rho do?
We do many things, but one of our main priorities is service. We are a service based organization and we participate in many community service projects at Kean University , but we also reach out to other causes and do our own separate community service. Although we are a service based organization, that doesn't stop the us from going out, having social events and mixers with other Greeks and having outings. We each have a unique and natural bond with one another, and we show so by having sisterhood outings together.
What Community Service projects is Lambda Chi Rho involved in?
We believe in helping others and giving to causes that will help make the community a better place. We have participated in SIDS walks in the past, Breast Cancer walks, the Health Walk, and also the March of Dimes walk. In Spring of 2006 we did a project for the Children’s Home Society when we collected money for foster babies. We have made items and donated them to nursing homes and worked on a Valentine’s Day projects for the past two years which donates homemade cards to sick children at the Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital . At Kean, we have participated in the St. Judes Research Hospital Up til Dawn events, Kean Volunteer Day at the Hillside Food Bank, the Somerset Hills School visit, blood drives, food drives and many other events. We fundraise by having bake sales and just some of the organizations we have donated to in the past include the American Diabetes Association, the America Heart Association and a variety of others. We believe in service.
How do I join a Lambda Chi Rho or a sorority in general?
The first key is contact! Although we may meet you, we welcome you emailing or contacting us by showing interest. Also, going to Meet the Greeks is a great way to introduce yourself to us and Greek life in general. Meet the Greeks is held twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring and after the event begins rush. Rush is the term commonly used for the time where girls or guys interested, go to events of the sorority or fraternity they are interested in joining. It is a series of events over a specific period of time where you, as an interest, are open to go to our open teas, (interest meetings) events and gatherings. Rush is the time where you and and sisters get the chance to know each other on a personal level. It is the time before the new member education process where it is your chance to come out to events, talk with sisters and find out about the sorority.
How do I become a sister of Lambda Chi Rho ?
Just like every other organization, interested girls if given a bid to join must go through the required time period to become a sister. We are genuinely shorter than other organizations, because we find that knowledge of our history, and our traditions is more important than anything else.
Why do I have to pay to get in?
First, lets dispel the myth that Greeks, “pay for their friends”. You’re not! Being a sister of Lambda Chi Rho is a priceless experience. We do ask that all of our active sisters pay dues twice a year, but they are to cover sorority expenses that will occur through the year, such as Greek Olympics, open teas, Homecoming and other events. Because we are a local sorority wereserve the right to have low dues, that currently range about 30-33 dollars a semester. Like we said, it’s a small cost to be involved in a truly open minded, confident and fun group of girls!
